1851 Scotch Hill, on the outskirts of Fair Haven, Vermont, was the site of the first commercial slate quarry in Vermont. The first Vermont Slate roof was installed in 1848. It is said that the farmer who owned the house insisted on waiting one year to pay for the roof because he wanted to be certain that his house wasn't going to collapse. That same roof is still doing its job after 152 years as are countless others that are nearly as old -- like this one, dated 1851. Return To Thumbnails |
